“I feel capable of doing it again”: Phil Collins (Genesis) explains why he is still hesitant about touring again
THE STORY

Phil Collins has not entirely given up on returning to the stage. At 75, the former Genesis singer says he is healthy enough to tour again. However, he is still unsure whether he really wants to return, particularly as he enjoys his current life without the commitments that come with performing.

Phil Collins sometimes considers touring again

In an interview with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where he will be inducted on November 14 for his solo career, the musician explains that he sometimes thinks about touring again.

He says: “When you’ve spent your whole life on stage and developed a taste for it, it’s hard to stop. I never say it’s over for good. Every now and then, I think I might go on tour again.”

The problem is that a tour is expensive to put together, and playing just five or six shows would not be financially viable. So while Collins sometimes considers hitting the road again, he also wonders whether his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame might be a fitting way to end his career.

He continues: “Sometimes I think I might still have more to say. But when I think about everything it involves, I feel that my Hall of Fame induction would be a lovely way to finish. Like a full stop at the end of a beautiful sentence.”

Collins has faced serious health problems in recent years. During Genesis’ final tour, which ended in 2022, he had to sing while seated. He also came close to death in 2024, following serious health complications.

He now says he is doing much better. However, he also enjoys being free of commitments, as he explains in the interview: “Today, I feel capable of doing it again. But I also think I’d rather enjoy the sunshine. There’s no pressure on me anymore, nothing I have to do. I get up in the morning and simply wonder what I’m going to do with my day.”

New songs remain a possibility

Collins is also considering recording new songs. He still has a studio at home, along with several tracks that are either finished or in progress.

He reveals: “I have a fully functioning studio in my basement, and I keep telling myself I should go down there. I have ideas, finished songs and others that are half-finished. So, who knows?”

His last solo album, Going Back, was released in 2010, while his most recent shows were on Genesis’ farewell tour, The Last Domino?, which ended in March 2022.
