Sharon Janny den Adel was born in Waddinxveen on the 12th of July 1974, beginning a life marked by both wanderlust and a deep connection to music. Her childhood was defined by frequent relocations, including time spent in Indonesia and Suriname, which instilled in her a sense of cultural openness. However, it was upon her return to the Netherlands and the discovery of her musical talents that her journey truly began to unfold.
At the age of fourteen, Sharon found solace from the challenges of high school through music, joining various rock bands and showcasing her undeniable talent. Fate intervened when she crossed paths with Robert Westerholt, sparking a shared passion that led to the formation of Within Temptation in 1996. Initially named The Portal, the band quickly evolved into Within Temptation, with Sharon’s powerful vocals and Robert’s guitar skills laying the foundation for their iconic sound.
Within Temptation’s early years saw them exploring the realms of gothic metal, with albums like “Enter” (1997) and “The Dance” (1998) establishing them as a rising force in the European metal scene. Tracks like “Restless” and “Mother Earth” showcased Sharon’s operatic vocals and set the stage for their future success.
As the new millennium dawned, Within Temptation underwent a musical evolution, incorporating symphonic elements into their sound with albums like “Mother Earth” (2000). This shift towards symphonic grandeur, exemplified by hits like “Ice Queen,” propelled them to mainstream recognition while still retaining their core metal fanbase.
Throughout Within Temptation’s journey, Sharon’s vocals remained a defining element, effortlessly soaring through complex musical arrangements and evoking emotions in listeners. Her ability to weave stories through her voice set her apart as a vocalist of unparalleled talent.
Outside of Within Temptation, Sharon actively collaborated with other artists, lending her vocals to projects by Avantasia, After Forever, Delain, and more. Her versatility and talent garnered immense respect within the music industry, solidifying her legacy as a powerhouse vocalist.
In 2017, Sharon embarked on a solo project called My Indigo, offering a more personal and introspective glimpse into her artistic depths. However, her bond with Within Temptation remained strong, leading to her return in 2018 and the release of critically acclaimed albums like “Resist” (2019) and “Bleed Out” (2023).
Beyond her musical endeavors, Sharon’s personal life blossomed with her husband Robert, with whom she shares a daughter, Eva Luna Westerholt, and a son, Robin Aiden Westerholt. Their family grew further with the announcement of a third child in 2010.
