Death Metal began its history in the mid-1980s, further developing the velocity and complexity of Thrash Metal. Influenced by such bands as Slayer, Kreator, and Celtic Frost, Death Metal became all about heaviness, velocity, and growling distorted vocals. It found its base with pioneering bands such as Death, Morbid Angel, and Obituary, with the help of labels such as Earache Records and Roadrunner Records.

It is characterized by extreme intensity, speed, and heaviness, which typically includes irregular tempo changes, fast intricate guitar work, double bass drumming, and blast beats. Guitars are usually downtuned and distorted, with two guitars playing both lead and rhythm simultaneously. Vocals range from deep guttural growls, known as grunting, to high-pitched hysterical screams. Common lyrical themes are the darker side of life, horror, and morbidity.

The genre has branched out into several subgenres, such as Brutal Death Metal, which is all about speed and aggression; Melodic Death Metal, which incorporates more melody and clean vocals; Technical Death Metal, which focuses on complex compositions; Death/Doom Metal, a fusion of Death Metal with slow, oppressive Doom Metal elements; and Death ‘n’ Roll, which includes elements of Punk, Hard Rock, and Rock ‘n’ Roll. There is also Modern Death Metal, which fuses Death Metal with Metalcore and Alternative Metal influences.

Originated in the United States by bands such as Possessed and Death, the genre spread to Europe, especially England, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Death Metal is still evolving and pushing the boundaries; its influence can be traced through many other metal subgenres.
