Power metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that originated in the 1980s. It is characterized by fast tempo, melodic guitar riffs, high-pitched vocals, and fantasy-based lyrics. Its origins can be traced to bands such as Helloween, who released the influential double album “Keeper of the Seven Keys” in 1987-1988, setting the standard for power metal.

Power metal enjoyed a good popularity in turn, especially in Europe, in countries like Germany, Italy, and Finland, where a lot of known bands emerged: Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish. Symphonic and epic elements can be present, as well as inspiration from mythology, science fiction, and fantastic literature.

The United States, however, took a different direction with regard to power metal development, and this was made possible by the likes of Iced Earth and Nevermore. The American scene was somehow surpassed by the popular thrash metal genre. In spite of this, some bands from the US, like Kamelot and Cellador, rose with their European influences.

The European power metal scene can also be divided into a few regional “schools” that each had their distinct characteristics. There’s the Italian school, initiated by Rhapsody, with its grandiose, orchestral approach; there’s the German school, driven by Helloween, where speed and melodic precision prevail; and there’s the Finnish school, with bands such as Stratovarius, that merges elements of both styles.

Power metal is generally characterized by clean and high-pitched vocals; Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian was famous for using multiple harmonized vocal parts. Guitarists and bassists use fast, melodic solos with intricate passages, while drummers typically use double bass drumming to maintain high speed.
